Invaders of the forest

(and almost everywhere else!)

Havenwoods is 237 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands. Because invasive species invade natural areas and "push out" native species, they are a threat to the integrity of these areas.

We need help controlling garlic mustard, teasel, buckthorn, crown vetch (shown in the photo above), and other invasive plants. (See Giving Nature a Hand.)

We also need watchful eyes monitoring for new invasives like the emerald ash borer.

To learn more about emerald ash borers visit www.dnr.state.wi.us/forestry/fh/ash/

Learn more about invasive species

Visit the Department of Natural Resources Invasive Species Web site <www.dnr.wisconsin.gov/invasives>

While you are there take time to:

Learn about invasive species. Watch for them at Havenwoods, your own backyard, and everywhere! We can only win the battle against invasives if everyone helps.

Watch out for

wild parsnip

Don’t touch this plant! The juices of wild parsnip can cause a serious skin rash.

Be especially careful on hot, sunny days.

Wild parsnip grows over 4' tall. The leaves resemble celery leaves. The yellow flowers look a lot like dill.
