What is Phenology?

Phenology—the observation of seasonal changes of plants and animals—is a science and a wonderful hobby. You don't need any fancy tools to start. Just observe the changes that are occurring in your backyard and in parks near your home.

Phenology has been around since there have been people to observe. These observations helped hunters and gatherers to know when edible plants were available. Farmers looked to budding trees, bird migrations, and emerging insects to decide when to sow their crops.

Whether you simply make a mental note of seasonal changes or track them year-to-year on a phenological calendar, you will enjoy the hints of spring awakening the earth everyday.
