Stewardship Project

In 2005 and 2008, Friends of Havenwoods received grants from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.

During the first grant period, from July 2005 through June 2007, FOH members removed buckthorn and other invasive plants, restored the old grassy trail, and developed a new section to complete a trail loop.

The current Stewardship Project involves continued removal of invasive species and planting of natives grasses, trees, and shrubs.

Havenwoods has changed dramatically since the mid-1970s. Nature already has an amazing ability to heal the land. When you add dedicated people, a few native trees, and some prairie seeds, the results are nothing less than remarkable.

Muscles, Determination,

and Patience

The dedicated group of volunteers who fight invasive plants year after year are a special breed. They have grown to love this land and are not willing to sit by, doing nothing as invasives attempt to outcompete the diversity of plants here at Havenwoods. Invasive plants are tough, but these folks are determined. They will never eliminate invasive species from Havenwoods, but with your help, they can control them. Our goal is for visitors to be able to enjoy an amazing variety of plants and animals right here in the city.
