Giving Nature a
Hand at
Havenwoods State
Forest
Havenwoods staff,
FOH members, and volunteers work together
to provide environmental education and recreation
opportunities for people of all ages AND to nurture
the land for people, plants, and wildlife.
That's
a big job . . . trails to maintain, weeds to pull,
lawns to mow, and visitors to greet! Here are some
of the ways that individuals and groups can give
Havenwoods a hand:
Call (414) 527-0232 to volunteer!

Crusade
against invasive plants
Over the years, the land at
Havenwoods has healed incredibly. You may
remember Havenwoods as a county prison, waste
dumpsite, and Nike missile site. Recovery and
restoration have come a long way, but there is still
much to do. One problem is the invasive plants that are
taking over recovering habitats. See
Invaders of the
Forest.
Individuals and groups are invited to reduce stress
and increase exercise by pulling, cutting, digging,
and hauling invasive plants! In spring, come tackle
garlic mustard and dame's rocket. In early summer,
crown vetch and bird's foot trefoil demand attention. During late summer, it's time for
thistles, teasel, and wild parsnip. And, in fall and
winter, you can cut buckthorn, honeysuckle, and Russian
olive. It's a year-long exercise plan!

Maintain a trail
Havenwoods has over 6 miles of trails! To maintain
them, staff and volunteers need to
add wood chips, prune
overhanging branches, and fill potholes. Trail
maintenance is usually done during the warm weather
months. Call to schedule a time for you or your
group to lend a hand.
Don't
forget
National Trails Day
June 2010
Day to be announced
9:00 am – 3:00 pm!

Greet visitors
Are you a
"people person"? Greeters answer phones, talk with
visitors, and help staff the building while
naturalists are busy teaching and leading hikes. Greeters/receptionists
are needed on Saturday mornings
from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon.

Pick up litter
There is
always a need for litter pick-up on the property!
Call to
schedule a time for you or your group to lend a
hand.
Havenwoods also
participates in the county-wide Great American
Cleanup on the fourth Saturday in April each year.

Make a festival
happen
Without
volunteers, Havenwoods couldn't offer annual festivals.
If you are an energetic, smiling, and helpful person
(ages
14 years and up), please volunteer to teach a
craft, demonstrate an outdoor skill, serve food,
or clean up the building or grounds. In 2009,
watch for:
Winter
NatureFest - Saturday, February 21, 10am – 4pm
Earth Day
NatureFest - Saturday, April 25, 10am - 2pm
Snake
NatureFest - Saturday, October 10, 10am - 2pm

Tend a garden
Kids get
their hands dirty and learn to garden in our kids'
gardening program. They can always use a little help
staying on top of the weeds! We'll provide the tools
and directions if you will provide the time and
effort. You can work in the gardens any time during
the growing season between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm
Monday through Friday. Please give a call (414)
527-0232 to set up a time.
