The Naturalist's Backyard is a beautiful, cool place to visit in summer.

Hike to the pedestrian bridge to watch great blue herons hunting frogs in the ponds and hawks soaring over the prairie.

On sunny mornings, walk the trail on the east side of the wetlands. At this time of day, the yellow flowers of compassplant, rosinweed, and cupplant turn to face the rising sun.

As you walk through the Nike prairie, look for places where the grass is flatten. These oval areas are places where deer have slept. Look closely and you might find large ovals made by adult deer and small ovals made by fawns.

On hot days, escape to the South Woods. While you are enjoying the cool shade, watch for wild turkeys.
